WHY DOES CISCO SUPPORT MULTIPLE PRICE SCHEDULES?
Cisco Systems currently supports two separate price schedules ("CHANNEL" and "CORE" ). Each schedule differs slightly from the other. The following statement attempts to clarify the differences and thus eliminate confusion for those who prefer having ready access to a published price schedule. Warranties on hardware, software, and service support remain fundamentally the same in each schedule. Product part numbers, however, do vary in specific cases.

Distributer "CHANNEL" Price Schedule - Products ordered from an authorized Cisco reseller are normally quoted from this schedule. Cisco manufactured products are delivered to the client from one of several well established two-tier channel distributors who work exclusively with authorized resellers. Advantages include: Products are typically in stock and available for immediate shipment. All router products ordered from a distributor come with a version of IP (IOS) bundled into the router's cost (regardless of the actual IOS specified by the customer). This is why routers appear to be higher priced than those that are ordered from Cisco direct (the cost of the IOS element, however, turns out to be much lower than the equivalent item shown on the Direct "CORE" Price Schedule). Depending on the item(s) requested, Channel prices could be more aggressively discounted than items priced within the "Core" schedule. Two-tier suppliers offer additional sales and support specials to authorized resellers (may be optionally passed on to buyers). Disadvantages include: Not all Cisco products are available through the channel (e.g. 7000, 12000 series routers). Router orders that specifiy an IOS component other than IP must be installed by either the buyer or reseller (cannot be ordered as factory pre-installed). Orders for for add-on memory (DRAM) and Flash must also be user installed. Click button above to download this price schedule (HTML format) onto your desktop.

Direct "CORE" Price Schedule - Orders that specify "direct factory shipment" are quoted from this schedule. Core product orders can be placed through a Premier Reseller after reseller attains approval from Cisco. Advantages include: This price schedule includes all Cisco published products, software and services. Router orders are pre-configured and shipped to meet the customer's requirements (e.g. specified IOS element is pre-installed). Orders for specific add-on memory (DRAM) and Flash requirements are shipped pre-installed from the factory. Disadvantages include: Availability is 2-3 weeks ARO. Buyers often pay more for a product as a "direct" order (compared to a distribution purchase). Shipping costs are usually higher when products are drop-shipped directly from the factory.
